COSEE-NE is dedicated to fostering meaningful and productive collaborations between scientists and educators and creating high-quality opportunities in ocean science education throughout New England.

Are you an ocean scientist who would like assistance engaging in educational outreach and achieving broader impacts? COSEE-NE would like to help you connect with educators in order to build meaningful educational collaborations.  Most recently, COSEE-NE hosted a workshop for professional facilitators (those who work to connect scientists and educators to advance ocean science education) to explore best practices and needs for facilitation.

 

COSEE-NE Workshops and Activities

COSEE-NE is developing several innovative ways for helping ocean scientists, informal science educators and K-12 educators to offer high-quality opportunities in ocean science education.  Learn more about our workshops and activities by browsing the links below.

  • Communicating Ocean Science  In the Spring semester of 2006, WHOI biologist Lauren Mullineaux teamed up with COSEE-CA to offer a course titled Communicating Ocean Sciences, recognizing graduate students’ interest in becoming more effective at conveying their oceanographic world.   • Sharing the Challenge (StC) - bringing ocean scientists and informal educators together to create exciting, contemporary exhibits.
  • Inquiry in Education Workshop - This workshop was designed to help scientists bring their natural expertise in inquiry to educational activities.

  • ScienceHack, a video-hosting site for the sciences,  currently holding 600 videos and growing. A news section has just been added, where users can submit news articles and videos, comment on them and vote for them. The developer plans on the site becoming a robust and widespread resource of scientific media.
  • Geospatial One Stop is organized around coastal and ocean framework data, needed for research, planning and management of coastal and ocean resources. These data include, bathymetry, shoreline, sea floor mapping, habitat, landcover, seismic data, fisheries, and marine boundaries. The Oceans and Coast Community within One Stop seeks to provide access to these data, clearinghouses, and applications, as well as information about the activities, programs, and committees that support the ocean and coastal community.

  • Google Ocean - this unofficial site compiles marine science data on a Google Earth platform for a detailed look at ocean resources.  The site is produced by Just Magic, a French software company, using their GeoGarage software to mash up Google Maps and Google Earth.

     
  • University of New Hampshire's Coastal Ocean Observing Center is a system for monitoring the linked oceanic and estuarine ecosystem in our region. This monitoring system has the capability to detect changes in the ecosystem across multiple physical and trophic levels. The Center offers many education resources for download and an improved data access tool for obtaining buoy, boat, and satellite data.
  • Registry of Science Outreach Volunteers (ROV) - a partnership of schools, scientific institutions, businesses, and community resources, whose purpose is to support, promote, and expand science and technology education and science literacy in the participating Massachusetts communities of Falmouth, Mashpee and Bourne. The purpose of the ROV is to help local teachers and students connect with researchers or others in the community who have scientific knowledge that they would like to share in an educational setting.  Read an article about the ROV here.
